Justice League: New Frontier is based on the comic that was divided into a 6 issue ark. It is a retelling of the origin story of the Green Lantern Hal Jordan and the Martian Manhunter J’onn J’onzz. The film takes place during the Silver Age of comics, and is done in an art style different from the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited Animate Series. The art style resembles the Batman Animated series more. It takes more of serious tone than other animated films.

Story

The story is a retelling of the origins of the Martin Manhunter, and how he came to Earth dealing with the government and his story of trying to get back home. The other story is about Hal Jordan and his time in the Air Force to private commercial aerospace ventures to his eventual turn to the Green Lantern of Earth. Overall, there’s the story of a mysterious creature is the main back drop, but many of the big name heroes are not seen nearly as much as the Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter. The story is told at a remarkably slow pace, even to the point I was wondering when the action was going to pick up. Fighting isn’t as big a part in this film as it was in the Justice League cartoon, and it might be a little too slow for some people, and children.

Sound

The music is good, but definitely not memorable. But since it’s animated, the main focus is the voice acting of the film. Most of the characters do have voices that match what the audience is normally used to from Justice League animated series. One voice that did not fully match and was extremely off to me was Batman, due to the generations of Batman cartoons having gritty voice that gave the full feel of Batman to the character. Even though he is not in the whole movie, when he does speak it pulls you out of the movie.

Extras

The extras for the Special Edition DVD are pretty decent, and give a good bang for your buck. It has a few featurettes that entail the History of the Justice League, and one that tells about the Legion of Doom. The two best extras on the DVD have to be the preview of the next DC animated film, ‘Gotham Knight’ and the three Justice League Unlimited episode on the second disc. The episodes are good for someone who never caught the show, or were big fans of the show and missed a few episodes.

Overall

The DVD is good, especially if you’re a big DC fan. But purchasing it wouldn’t be the best choice for all people, mainly due to the fact that it lingers and doesn’t immediately jump into the action. If you are a big DC fan and love to see the characters in a 50s motif, then it’s good to purchase and watch a few times.

I’ve decided to do a review on Family Guy since we openly do not include it in the Cartoon Cast. The review will be cut into two sections; first will be the show before it was canceled. The second will be in its return to Fox Broadcasting, and the newer episodes.

The First Run:

When Family Guy first came onto the air, it took what South Park did but at more pop-cultural references. This is where the majority of the comedic substance came from the fact you could see these old references and laugh at them. In addition, it was far more random moments in the show gave it a unique approach to some situations. It was hilarious to watch all the random things, and idiotic stunts pulled off by Peter and the cast of characters. The show was extreme and truly golden for its time. The original run of Family Guy was genuinely genius.

The Comeback:

One word to describe the new Family Guy: Pretentious. This show knows its funny, so it tries to do funny things to show how funny it is. The show has a metaphoric stick up its metaphoric rear. The show feels it is funny so it does not need to be funny, creating a paradox of how it might be funny. The show has become an entity that thinks they can make comedy instead of work within the principles of comedy. It’s filled with random even more random nonsensical scenes, which were funny in the early shows. But it overdoses on what makes it good. The classic saying ‘…in moderation’ truly does fall right into place here. Still, with the strong fan base of idiots and stoners the show has some comedic value, but nothing compared to shows which are far superior like; Futurama, Simpsons, and South Park.
